Your AI citation has an expiration date

You got cited by ChatGPT. Great. Now start the clock.

Scrunch and Stacker analyzed 3.5 million citation events across AI platforms from September 2025 to March 2026. Their core finding: the average AI citation drops by half in about 4.5 weeks.

That's roughly one month before half the visibility you earned simply evaporates. Not because your content got worse, but because AI models constantly reshuffle their sources.

If you've been treating Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) as a "set it and forget it" play, this data should change your mind.

Not all platforms forget at the same speed

The 4.5-week average hides a wide range across platforms:

  • ChatGPT: 3.4 weeks. The fastest turnover in the study. If you're optimizing for ChatGPT citations, you need to refresh and re-earn them roughly every month.
  • Perplexity: 5.8 weeks. Nearly 70% longer than ChatGPT. Citations here compound over time more than on any other platform.
  • Google AI surfaces (AI Mode, Gemini, AI Overviews): 4.3 to 4.8 weeks. They cluster together, suggesting Google runs a fairly consistent citation refresh cycle across its AI products.

The takeaway: where you get cited matters almost as much as whether you get cited. A Perplexity citation is worth more in terms of staying power than a ChatGPT citation, even though ChatGPT has more users.

Industry matters, but less than you'd think

Scrunch and Stacker also broke the data down by vertical:

  • Insurance (5 weeks) and financial services (4.8 weeks) had the stickiest citations. Makes sense: authoritative, evergreen content that doesn't change quarter to quarter.
  • Healthcare (4.1 weeks) and retail/ecommerce (4.3 weeks) turned over fastest. These are categories where recency matters more, so AI platforms swap sources more aggressively.

But here's the kicker: platform choice has more leverage than your industry. A healthcare brand cited on Perplexity (5.8 weeks) will outlast an insurance brand cited on ChatGPT (3.4 weeks). You can't change your vertical, but you can change which platforms you optimize for.

Editorial sources last twice as long

One of the most actionable findings in the study: citations from editorial news domains lasted roughly 2x longer than citations from non-editorial domains.

Scrunch ran this analysis using Stacker's Partner Network, a curated network of 4,000+ news publishers. Domains in that network showed materially longer half-lives across every AI platform, with no exceptions.

The biggest durability advantages showed up on Perplexity and Gemini, where editorial sources lasted 6.5+ additional weeks compared to non-editorial domains. Even on ChatGPT (the lowest-durability platform), editorial sources survived 2.4x longer.

The strongest combination in the entire dataset: Perplexity + editorial source = 12.3 weeks. That's nearly three months of sustained citation visibility.

For GEO and AEO practitioners, this points to a clear strategy: getting your data, quotes, and research cited in reputable editorial publications creates a compounding durability advantage that self-published content alone can't match.

What this means for your AI visibility strategy

The half-life data reshapes how you should think about GEO/AEO investment:

1. Citation monitoring needs to be continuous, not quarterly.

If half your citations disappear every 4-5 weeks, checking visibility once a quarter means you're flying blind for most of the cycle. You need to track citation share for your target prompts on a weekly basis, at minimum. When a citation drops, you need to know immediately so you can act.

2. ChatGPT optimization requires the most maintenance.

With a 3.4-week half-life, ChatGPT is the highest-effort platform to maintain visibility on. That doesn't mean you should ignore it (it's still the largest AI search platform), but budget your GEO/AEO resources accordingly. Expect to re-earn ChatGPT citations roughly every month.

3. Perplexity is the long game.

If you're looking for the best return on citation investment, Perplexity's 5.8-week half-life (and 12.3 weeks for editorial sources) makes it the most capital-efficient platform. Citations there stick around long enough to compound.

4. Get your research into editorial publications.

The 2x durability advantage for editorial sources is too large to ignore. Original research, proprietary data, expert commentary placed in news outlets doesn't just build brand credibility through traditional PR. It also creates more durable AI citations. This is where GEO/AEO and digital PR overlap.

5. Play both offense and defense.

Scrunch frames it well: citation strategy requires playing both sides. Offense means earning new citations through fresh content and outreach. Defense means monitoring existing citations and refreshing the content that supports them before they decay.

The bigger picture for GEO and AEO

This research confirms something many of us suspected: AI visibility isn't a one-time achievement. It's an ongoing operation.

Traditional SEO has a similar dynamic (rankings fluctuate, content needs updating), but the cycle in GEO/AEO is compressed. A page that ranks #3 in Google might hold that position for months. A source cited by ChatGPT might cycle out in three weeks.

That compression is exactly why managed AI visibility services exist. The monitoring cadence, content refresh velocity, and multi-platform optimization required to maintain AI citations at scale isn't something most marketing teams can bolt onto their existing workflow.

The brands that treat AI visibility as a continuous operation, not a project, are the ones that will hold their citations while competitors keep cycling in and out.

Stop losing citations every month

Our managed GEO/AEO service handles citation monitoring, content refresh, and multi-platform optimization so you don't have to re-earn visibility from scratch every 4 weeks.
