Query fanout
When a user sends a prompt to ChatGPT, the system doesn't pass it directly to a search engine. It breaks the question into multiple sub-queries, a process called query fanout. A single prompt can generate 8 to 15+ derivative queries, each targeting a different aspect of the original question.
Research from Peec AI analyzing 20 million ChatGPT query fan-outs found that the average word count per fan-out doubled between October 2025 and January 2026, from about 6 words to about 12. ChatGPT is making each individual search query more precise, not issuing more of them.
This means your content needs to serve not just the primary question, but the full constellation of sub-queries the AI generates around it.
Source selection and citation

How to measure AI visibility

What GEO looks like in practice
A typical GEO process follows four phases:
Comprehend. Audit how AI currently perceives your brand, your competitors, and your industry. Run your most important prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. Document who gets cited, who gets recommended, and where the gaps are.
Influence. Create content specifically engineered for AI citation. This means answer blocks (40-60 word passages that directly answer specific questions), comparison content with structured data, and entity-rich pages that establish topical authority.
Track. Monitor your AI visibility continuously. Weekly at minimum. AI models update frequently, competitors publish new content, and citation patterns shift. A brand cited on Monday can be replaced by Friday.
Evolve. Adapt your strategy as platforms change. What works for ChatGPT today may not work after the next model update. Continuous monitoring and rapid response are non-negotiable.
Common mistakes
Treating GEO as SEO with different keywords. The mechanics are fundamentally different. Different content formats, different authority signals, different success metrics. You can't bolt GEO onto an existing SEO program and expect results.
Publishing AI-generated content at scale. Google has already penalized websites that flooded the web with self-promotional listicles, with some brands seeing 30-50% drops in visibility. AI platforms are similarly learning to filter low-quality content.
